Queen Mary Innovation Ltd (QMI) is QMUL’s wholly-owned technology transfer company. QMI is responsible for capturing the university’s innovative ideas and turning them into commercial reality. It focuses on the management of the University’s intellectual property and portfolio of spinout companies. In doing so, QMI helps to boost research and development at QMUL, as well maximising the economic and societal of its research.
QMI’s Technology Transfer services include:
• Building a strong pipeline of opportunities by identifying and protecting early-stage new technology innovations,
• Securing proof of concept / translational research funding to develop new technologies and
• The exploitation of research-derived technologies through licensing and new spinout creation.
The QMI team has a diverse and comprehensive knowledge of technology commercialisation, transferring ideas from the lab into the market. QMI engages researchers across a broad range of academic disciplines and sectors, including pharmaceuticals, engineering, telecoms, creative industries, government departments and community organisations.
QMI fosters an entrepreneurial culture for QMUL staff and students, promoting and developing the next generation technologies.
QMI has secured 130 commercial licenses with industry to exploit QMUL intellectual property, returning over £3 million of commercial income to the University.
QMI has a strategic focus on the creation of new sustainable spinout companies, establishing at least one new company each year since 2008.
QMI’s growing portfolio of high-growth technology spinouts has attracted in excess of £150 million of external venture capital investment.
