Barts Health Innovations in Healthcare Awards 2018

Queen Mary Innovation Ltd and Barts Health hosted the annual Barts Health Innovation in Healthcare Awards. The expert judging panel evaluated a plethora of high quality applications in the following categories Innovation of the Year, Dragon’s den Style Award, Collaboration Award-Barts and QMUL and Service Improvement Award.
The winners were announced at the Awards Ceremony held in the historic Barts Pathology Museum on 16 May 2018.
Innovation of the Year
Winner - Joanne Martin
eCPD app based learning platform
The eCPD app is used by by a wide range of professionals for online CPD, statutory and mandatory training in different organisations and different countries. It provides better-trained and informed staff. More than 41,000 modules have been completed so far.
Runner-up - Karen Hoffmann and Nicole Skeltys
App for trauma patients to help their recovery
The App provides increased rehabilitation whilst in hospital and at home and improved self-management of the recovery.
Dragon’s Den Style Award
Winner - Sharmilee Gnanapavan, Lucia Bianchi, Francesca Ammoscato, David Holden
Development of the Neurofilament light chain assay to allow for prognostication in Multipla Sclerosis patients
The test allows multiple sclerosis physicians to evaluate the individual’s risk of disease progression. Patients benefit significantly from the appropriate treatment related to the progression of the disease.
Runner-up - Megan Hall-Jackson
Development of the low cost training manikin for the insertion of Central Venous Catheters.
Low cost manikin offers medical students better training experience. It allows full procedure to be performed including ultrasound guidance and every student has a “first puncture” feel on their own manikin.

Winner - Gavin Dreyer, Sally Hull, Sec Hoong, Helen Rainey, Fae Wilkins, Ana Guiterez Nicki Thomas, Neil Ashman
The East London Community Kidney Service for innovative solutions to managing kidney disease
The team set up virtual kidney clinics where consultants provide patients review via web. By identifying high-risk patients and bridging the gap between primary and secondary care, the team significantly reduced waiting times from weeks to days.
The East London Community Kidney Service is used by 170 practices in East London.

Novel way of analysing social media in order to improve self-management of different diseases
Using novel approach to increase confidence of large numbers of patients to self-care for chronic conditions and to reduce demand on GPs, A&Es and hospital admissions.
Service Improvement Award
Winner - Physician Response Unit
A collaborative service operated by Barts Health NHS Trust, London’s Air Ambulance (LAA) and London Ambulance Service (LAS).
The service delivers advanced emergency care or assessments to complex patients in the community, patients are treated and/or assessed at home. The service is available via 999.
Runner-up - Barts Health Paediatric Diabetes Cross-Site Multidisciplinary Team
Tailor made package of care for paediatric diabetic patients
Piloted at Newham, Royal London and Whipps Cross Hospitals. It is a novel educational concept to improve paediatric diabetic patients disease self-management, improve quality of life and reduces long term complications related to the disease.

Virtual Biologic Clinic for rheumatology patients
The virtual clinic was piloted at Whipps Cross Hospital. Patients were reviewed virtually, had rapid access to the treatment and showed increased compliance with the biologic treatment.
